GLAMP DOME SHIMONOSEKI

Akama Jingu

Akama Jingu enshrines Emperor Antoku, who drowned at the age of 8 after the Battle of Dan-no-ura.

The red Suitenmon gate, designed to resemble the Palace of the Dragon (Ryugu Castle), is stunning.

The shrine’s predecessor, Amidaji (temple), is the setting for the Yakumo Koizumi’s famous ghost story, “Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi (Hoichi the Earless).”

At the temple, you can find the statue of Hoichi playing the biwa as well as the graves of the Taira clan.

You might hear him playing the biwa for the spirits of the Taira clan even now…

Nii-no-Ama, the wife of Taira no Kiyomori, is said to have composed a poem, “There is a capital even in the sea.” Standing brightly as it watches over Dan-no-ura, Akama Jingu is a symbol of the Kanmon Straits.
